And recorded a personal video message. Just for Susie. And said the words that stopped me completely. He said — not only is Susie the first female chief of staff in American history. She is the best chief of staff ever in history. I say the best, actually. And I am tremendously grateful for her friendship loyalty and support every single day. And then I found out something that broke me even further. Susie walked in while he was filming it. Saw what he was doing. And quietly ducked out the back door. Because that is just who she is. A woman who grew up watching her famous father disappear into alcoholism. Who sat him down in 1992 and saved his life. Who quietly built three presidential campaigns.
Who became the first female Chief of Staff in American history. And who — nine weeks into cancer treatment — still comes to work every single day. Still does her job. Still does not complain. And when asked how she wants to be remembered — said simply — I want to be known as someone who was predictable. Steady. Considerate of everybody. And I sat with that sentence for a very long time. Because the most powerful woman in the White House wants to be remembered for being steady. Not powerful. Not historic.
Just steady. Tonight, say one prayer for Susie Wiles. For the woman who ducked out the back door when the President of the United States was recording a tribute just for her. God, please heal her completely. She has more than earned every blessing coming her way.
